ABOUT

Chief Conductor of the Orchestra della Toscana since 2023, Italian conductor Diego Ceretta has rapidly established himself as one of the most compelling young talents on the international podium.

A graduate of the Milan Conservatory, he studied composition, violin, and orchestral conducting, earning top honors under the mentorship of Maestro Daniele Agiman. He further honed his craft at the Italian Conducting Academy with Gilberto Serembe and at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena, where he studied with Luciano Acocella and Daniele Gatti, receiving the Diploma of Merit in 2019.

Ceretta has served as assistant to Daniele Gatti for the world premiere of Julius Caesar by Giorgio Battistelli at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, and collaborated with the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra under Fabio Luisi for Mahler’s Symphony No. 2.

He has led performances with many of Italy’s premier orchestras, including the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino during the 85th Festival, Orchestra del Teatro Regio di Torino, Filarmonica Toscanini, Orchestra del Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano, Orchestra dell’Arena di Verona, Orchestra del Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, the Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana, the Haydn Orchestra of Bolzano and Trento, the Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto, the Orchestra Filarmonica Marchigiana, and the Orchestra Sinfonica Rossini of Pesaro. His international engagements have included the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo, Orchestre National de Montpellier (with Alexandre Tharaud), and the Krakow Philharmonic.

Ceretta’s operatic appearances include La Sonnambula (Teatro Lirico di Cagliari), Donizetti’s Zoraida di Granata (Wexford Opera Festival), a new production of La Battaglia di Legnano (Festival Verdi), Il Matrimonio Segreto (Ancona), a new production of Macbeth (Rete Lirica delle Marche, directed by Pierluigi Pizzi), Don Quixote (Teatro San Carlo di Napoli at the Louvre Museum), L’Elisir d’Amore (Teatro Comunale di Bologna), and Il Barbiere di Siviglia (Teatro Regio di Parma).

Festival highlights include debuts at the Rossini Opera Festival,Turku Music Festival, Festival Verdi, MiTo Festival, Festival della Valle d’Itria, and Ravello Festival. Recent and future highlights include Il Barbiere di Siviglia at Opéra de Lille, the War Requiem and La Bohème with the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, and a symphonic concert with the Orchestra of the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma.

Ceretta is among our emerging young conductors — that much was already known — but his performance exceeded expectations: sonic transparency, elegance, and never trivial accompaniments marked his brilliant and stylistically flawless interpretation of the opera, starting with the highly applauded overture.
